Engaging the Other - Finding TRUE Common Ground in the Age of Polarization
A Conversation With Steve Olweean, Director Common Bond Institute
“Before we have peace in the Middle East, we first need to create peace in the Middle West.” — Swami Beyondananda
My colleague Bruce Lipton, cellular biologist, tells us that the next phase of human evolution is an evolution in consciousness, where we recognize that we are each and all cells in the larger body of humanity. If that is true, it’s easy to see how so much of our resource and intention is tied up in obsolete and “obsolethal” forms of interactivity that can best be seen as autoimmune disease. After all, when healthy humans on two sides of an issue spend their time and energy in combat, two things happen. First, warfare endangers not just the lives of those engaged in the conflict, but life on the planet. Secondly, precious energy and resources that could be used to work together is being dissipated and wasted.
That’s why last weekend’s Unrig the System Summit in New Orleans was so encouraging … 1,500 “proactivists” (i.e., proactively moving forward as an alternative to reactively resisting) who get what Bruce and I concluded in Spontaneous Evolution — that the Darwinian notion of “survival of the fittest” has now proven to be “thrival of the fittingest.” Those who cooperate, survive and thrive.
Indeed, this evolutionary upwising is well on its way, even if we don’t see it on the news.
Our guest this week, Steve Olweean from the Common Bond Institute is a therapist who has spent the past 35 years in community mental health, serving underserved populations, specializing in trauma and abuse recovery, victim/perpetrator dynamics, crisis intervention, dissociative disorders, and healing negative belief systems. Since 2001, he has focused on creating cross-cultural dialogue both here and abroad to create mutual trust and understanding between Muslim and non-Muslim populations.
This April, the Common Bond Institute under Steve’s direction will be holding its 8th annual Engaging the Other conference in Madison, Wisconsin. It is described as an interactive, working conference to:
* Address rising polarization and animosity in our society
* Advance a wider public dialogue about toxic images of “Us and Them,”
* and Promote positive joint action for compassionate remedies and healing in our relationship with a perceived “Other.”
Our conversation this week will focus on both the opportunities and challenges in “engaging the other”, and will focus his experiences both in the Middle East … and the Middle West. He writes: “The Other often conjures up images of strange faces, practices, and beliefs, usually in faraway places. At the same time that it challenges our understanding, our sense of normalcy, and sometimes our sense of security, it is a label we all share.”
In other words, we are each an “other” to each other.
Tune in this Tuesday, February 13th and find out how such “living laboratories” can unleash “the speed of trust” and turn conflict into collaboration.

The Planets This Week: February 12, 2018
What do the planets have in store for this week? Well… the big news of the week, month and year is the Solar Eclipse in Aquarius on February 15th. This eclipse is part of a series of eclipses that started at the beginning of 2017. Two weeks after 2018’s first Lunar Eclipse in Leo comes the first Solar Eclipse at 27 degrees Aquarius. Considering that Solar Eclipses bring about radical change, the fact that this is in the sign of rebellion and progress amplifies the possibilities. Aquarius isn’t one for gradual change or for asking permission from superiors. Aquarius desires what’s good for everyone – whether they know it or not yet. With both the Sun and Moon in Aquarius, this Solar Eclipse may bring sudden, unexpected, and radical changes, particularly on a national or even global scale.
What can you expect from this Solar Eclipse? Nothing short of the unexpected. Chances are, most of the changes will be pleasant or at least neutral, but if you have planets or angles in the fixed signs, you may be profoundly affected in one way or another. Those who wish to maintain the establishment may have the worst of it, and those who thirst for change may feel as if this is jagged blessing from the universe.
Also, this week, communication planet Mercury moves into Pisces where it will be until March 5th. Our intuitive powers are strong, while our rational mind might be on hiatus. We’re in touch with the big picture and higher vision, but the details of daily life escape us. Miscommunications and misunderstandings are possible, as we lose focus and it becomes more difficult to tell the difference between dreams and reality.
Tune in on Monday 6pm PT/9pm ET.

What If Living Your Dream Was Easy
Never give up, never give in and never quit! Things never show up the way you thing they will. Every choice you have made has gotten you here, now. What next? Join Corinna Kaebel as she takes you on her journey to a life she now loves and lives her dream. What shows up, the journey it took her on might, the experiences she had not be what you expected.
Guest Bio:
I never could “place myself” in the world, neither professionally nor geographically. I did my best to try and warm up to the “necessities” of this reality – like having a stable job, settling down, having a family, providing for old age – and be happy with it – but it never worked. So I set out on a quest for what would allow me to bring as much light into peoples’ worlds as possible – which brought me to where I am today.
As a translator, interpreter and language teacher for Russian, English and German, fitness instructor, massage therapist and coach I have lived in Germany, London, the Caucasus region and Moscow – and now, as a Certified Facilitator and Joy of Business Facilitator, I am traveling the world and super excited to use any and all of them in any combination required to facilitate people into recognizing their power, potency and possibilities.
For this is exactly what I love – exploring what we together can create as soon as we step out of our perceived limitations and start to see our uniqueness.
To quote Simone: If you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you choose?

From Rock To New Age Soul - Creating A New Musical Genre with Former Wishbone Ash Guitarist Ted Turner and Majella
When English guitarist, songwriter and singer, Ted Turner, best known for his work with the 1970’s rock band Wishbone Ash first encountered English singer, songwriter and actor, Majella, in 2005, neither imagined their initial friendship, borne out of admiration for each other’s professional abilities and unique musical styles, would one day result in a union that would not only culminate in marriage, but also in the birth of a brand new musical genre that fans have quickly labeled “New Age Soul.”
Although aware of each other’s drive for creating music, neither could have imagined the synergy to be found through collaboration. Their music, which comes from the heart and the depths of their souls, is, they say, not just a beautiful testament to their love, but a reminder that the heart connection is where we overcome our greatest obstacles and live the fullest expression of who we really are. Pivotal to the creation of their songs and music is their acute awareness that the planet is hurting. They are committed to using their musical platform to raise awareness of this crisis, and, as vegans, to support a world based on “compassion instead of cruelty.”
In this week’s program, Ted Turner and Majella join Sandie to discuss their individual and collective stories, what Ted learned from Buckminster Fuller, and how their passion for the planet, for animals, for humanity, and for each other inspire them in their daily lives and in the creation of their music, which we will be able to sample.
About the Guest: Ted Turner and Majella
Best known for his work with the 1970’s rock band Wishbone Ash, in which he was famed for his twin lead guitar instrumental arrangements alongside Andy Powell, English guitarist, singer and songwriter, Ted Turner’s distinctive style of lap steel guitar contributed to a variety of Wishbone Ash recordings. Acknowledged as one of Rolling Stone’s ‘Top Twenty Rock Guitarists of All Time,’ Ted was also invited to play on John Lennon’s iconic album, Imagine.
After extensive touring with Wishbone Ash, Ted left the band in 1975 to pursue a personal pilgrimage. Whilst traveling, he was drawn to the comprehensive works of Buckminster Fuller, becoming involved in the ‘World Man Band’ (alongside Michael Mitchell) – an initiative designed to raise global consciousness through rock music.
Ted reunited with the original members of the band in 1987 to record Nouveau Calls for Miles Copeland III’s No Speak label, and then rejoined them in 1989. Since leaving the band for the second time in 1992, Ted has continued to explore eclectic musical influences which have formed his latest album, Better Together, a collaboration with his wife Majella, whom he is excited to introduce to the world.
English singer, songwriter, and actor, Majella, began creating as a young child, and by her early teens was showcasing her songwriting skills around the U.K. Her rich ancestral Celtic roots had always been a driving force in the composition of evocative songs that tell stories. She continued to develop this passion when training in Drama. As a young budding artist, she was focused on combining her love of music and theatre, and also as a playwright, directing and performing in a series of popular and original musical plays, which explored the gritty reality of the community in which she lived. With the aim of liberating younger audiences, her plays encouraged them to be bold in seeking their dreams. Educating children not only defined her as a person but also as an artist – a period of her life that she refers to as “paid therapy” in that, she found her students to be her greatest teachers.
