Don’t Give Your Power to the Trigger!

Navigate it to Neutral Instead

Have you ever experienced a situation where you were caught off guard by something that reminded you of a past trauma?

Perhaps you experienced a word, a sound or smell, or someone’s action that activated your stress response? Then without rational thought, you simply reacted.

When we suddenly lose control over our reactions and find ourselves responding in overly defensive or protective ways to regain the stability of safety, we’re witnessing the power of a trigger.

Triggers are difficult to anticipate. But they always involve an emotional response that’s based in the past, whether we’re conscious of it or not. And they can throw us off balance.

When they do, we can easily give our power to the trigger. This leaves us experiencing: the feeling of walking on eggshells; exhibiting explosive behavior; delivering irrational responses; or shutting down.

When we’ve given our power to the trigger, we become a victim, without intending to be. To find our balance, we must stand in present moment neutrality.

Navigating a trigger to neutral requires: recognizing the personal conflict; stepping back from the past and its fears; and living in the present moment.
