Dean Sluyter – Fear Less
On the 100th Episode of Destination Unlimited!
What are you afraid of? Are you afraid of public speaking, making a mistake at work, flying, losing someone you love or even dying? What angers you? Are you angry at our political climate, your neighbor’s dog that occasionally soils your sidewalk, your neighbor, your spouse or even yourself? What are you addicted to? Are you addicted to your cell phone, social media, shopping, food, sex, alcohol, drugs or even to a person? Is there a simple, natural way to transcend fear, anger and addiction and find the life of peace, security and happiness that is your birthright?
My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Dean Sluyter, says there is. Dean Sluyter has taught natural methods of meditation and awakening since 1970. A grateful student of Eastern and Western sages in several traditions, Dean has completed numerous pilgrimages and retreats in India, Tibet, Nepal, and the West. He is known for conveying authentic teachings in forms that are relaxed, accessible, and down-to-earth. Dean gives talks, workshops, and retreats throughout the United States and beyond, from Ivy League colleges to maximum-security prisons. His media appearances have included National Public Radio, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Coast to Coast AM, The Dr. Oz Show, and O, The Oprah Magazine. When not writing or teaching, he narrates audio books, makes music, and happily tools around town on his Vespa. His highly acclaimed books include Natural Meditation, an Amazon #1 stress management bestseller, and Nautilus Gold Medal winner for best mind-body-spirit book .
His website is fearlessbook.net and he joins me this week to discuss his latest book, Fear Less – Living Beyond Fear, Anxiety and Addiction.

Comedy as “Sacred Space” and Cartoons on the Radio – How Levity Uplifts Us in Unfunny Times
A Conversation with Comedian Alicia Dattner and Cartoonist Brian Narelle
“Why humor and politics? Because there’s definitely something funny going on.” — Swami Beyondananda
What is the state of satire when “reality” is more perversely paradoxical than any comedy routine?
What happens when much of comedy censorship comes from … the left?
What’s funny in a world that has become insanely serious?
To address these sticky icky questions on this week’s show, I’ve invited two of my favorite “cosmic comic co-hearts”, Alicia Dattner and Brian Narelle.
Alicia Dattner is a “wise gal” who’s done everything from stand-up to comedy coaching to solo shows, including One Life Stand, The Oy of Sex, and Eat, Pray, Laugh! She was voted Best Comedian in both the SF Weekly and SF Bay Guardian Reader’s Polls. Her fifth show, One Life Stand, a standup comedy special, is currently touring. She’s also creator of The Spiritual Comedy Festival and teaches highly-acclaimed storytelling workshops under the banner Solo Showdown. http://soloshowdown.com and http://aliciadattner.com
Alicia has also made the bold statement that the comedy club is “sacred space” where “anything goes”.
Brian Narelle is a multi-talented comic genius who began his career as the star of the cult classic film, Dark Star, and has been a successful puppeteer, animator and cartoonist. As puppeteer, he worked for the award winning children’s programs, Bingo and Molly and Buster and Me featured on the Discovery Channel and NBC. In addition to illustrating numerous books (including my own Swami For Precedent), he has taught cartooning at the Charles Schultz Museum. Brian now has a new book of cartoons, Surviving Trump — The Lyin’ King. His work can be found online at: https://www.narellecartoons.com/

The Hero’s Journey to Joy after Loss
Every day, people suffer heartbreaks of some kind―loss of a loved one, divorce, illness, loss of a job or home―and seek to understand why these losses and traumas have befallen them and how they’ll make it through in one piece. It is possible to traverse the jagged edge of growth and emerge as the hero whole, happy, and awaken to a deep love affair with life once again, as my guest, Kristine Carlson knows first-hand.
About the Guest: Kristine Carlson
Kristine Carlson is a New York Times bestselling author, speaker, and leader in the field of transformation. After collaborating with her late husband Dr. Richard Carlson to create a publishing industry phenomenon with the Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff series—selling more than 25 million copies worldwide—today, Kris is emerging as a profound teacher in the areas that matter most to the human heart: how to heal and how to love.
Kris has captivated readers around the world with her previous six books, which includes Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff in Love; Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff for Women; Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff for Moms; An Hour to Live, An Hour to Love: The True Story of the Best Gift Ever; and Heartbroken-Open: A Memoir Through Loss to Self-Discovery. In her forthcoming book, From Heartbreak to Wholeness: The Hero’s Journey to Joy, she offers a process for healing that goes beyond common prescriptions for getting through the pain of heartbreak of all kinds. She takes readers by the hand, giving them a life-altering map for navigating the journey from loss to joy—one that can awaken them to a deep love affair with life.
Kris’s acclaimed live events currently include the “What Now? Retreat” along the Northern California coast (along with the “What Now?” online program) and the “Women’s Wisdom and Yoga Retreat” in Umbria, Italy. As a sought-after speaker, Kris is known for her authenticity, vulnerability, and humor, leaving her audiences moved, inspired, and optimistic about the future. She has been featured on national radio and television, including The Today Show, Good Morning America, The View, and The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Kris has served on the Board of Directors and the Global Leadership Council for Challenge Day, and she’s a member of the Association of Transformational Leaders (ATL). She was honored to join the Go Red for Women campaign for the American Heart Association in 2012 as their keynote speaker. In 2010, she was honored with the Kennedy Laureate Award by John F. Kennedy University, an acknowledgment also given to Alice Waters and Dr. Sanjay Gupta for their work in the area of mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.
Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, Live the Big Stuff podcast and authors a blog at her website kristinecarlson.com. She is mom to two daughters and “Nana” to four grandchildren (soon to be five). She lives in California.

The Planets This Week: June 18, 2018
The astro headline of the week is that we will be celebrating the Summer Solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere (and the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere). This coincides with the Sun moving into Cancer which means this show is dedicated to all you Crabs!
Under this influence many of us might long for deeper connections and a sense of belonging. Familiarity and security seem more important than meeting new people or exploring new places or ideas. The impulse now is to strengthen bonds with our partner, family and close friends.
The past may have a strong pull now, and we could find ourselves lost in nostalgia, flipping through photo albums or grandma’s old memorabilia. We might also be drawn to reconnect with people from our past, or to revisit our old haunts. Traditions are more attractive now, and we could even have a tendency to be a bit old-fashioned.
Also this week, nebulous Neptune turns retrograde until November 24th. Neptune is related to our creativity and spiritual life. It is often called the planet of illusion, because it rules all things illusory — the intangible, the ethereal, the abstract and elusive. When Neptune is retrograde, we’re more likely to be attentive to these areas of our life and give them voice. We may not present the efforts of your inspirations right away — that may wait till Neptune has gone direct — but we will cherish them all the more for waiting. Keep a dream journal, as dreams are likely to be vivid and meaningful during Neptune Retrograde, if we take the time to interpret them.
Tune in on Monday 6pm PT/9pm ET to find out more.
