Most Of What You Believe About Poverty Is Wrong with Mauricio Miller!
Aired Tuesday, 19 February 2019, 5:00 PM EST
An Interview with Mauricio Miller, Founder of The Alternative Project
“The war on poverty? It’s over. The poor people have surrendered.” — Swami Beyondananda
At a time when the gap between rich and poor is the widest in ninety years, we need more funding for poverty programs, right?
Well … maybe and maybe not. This week’s guest, Mauricio Miller, author of The Alternative, points out that poverty programs over the past 50 years haven’t really moved the dial. What if the poverty programs themselves kept the conditions in place? What if the real beneficiaries have been those who have SERVED the underserved community? What if these programs promote dependency and not self-reliance?
What if the current way of giving help has left people helpless, and actually created a “industry” that makes sure the problem stays in place, largely unsolved?
Here is a quote from The Alternative that may shed some light on the “shadow” of anti-poverty programs:
In a letter to pastors, while in the Birmingham jail, Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote:
“I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizens Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate.” Noting their paternalism, he continued, “Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill.”
Mauricio’s understanding comes from his own upbringing in a single-parent family. His mother — proud, resourceful, independent and smart — found herself up against stereotyped images of who people thought she was, and a social welfare system that discouraged all of those things!
After years of watching that same system disempower and fail to serve the next generation, he presented California’s then-Governor Jerry Brown with a radical plan to encourage poor communities to cultivate their own resources and find their own solutions. He founded the Family Independence Initiative (FII) in 2001, to capture the stories and data which demonstrate that low-income families, when working together, have the capacity to help themselves and help one another towards sustained upward mobility. Now working independently on the “Alternative Project”, Mauricio seeks to utilize those proof points to challenge the negative stereotype that low income families are “takers” from society. The project advocates for investing directly in family and group self-determined efforts, increasing mobility and their contributions to society.
In recognition of his unconventional approach to generating economic mobility among low-income families, Mauricio was awarded a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship in 2012. He was appointed by President Obama to the White House Council for Community Solutions, is an Ashoka Fellow, a Prime Mover Fellow and a Purpose Prize winner among other awards. He was honored with an invitation to President Clinton’s 1999 State of the Union address, has served on bank and philanthropic boards and started small businesses. He is the author of “The Alternative: Most of what you believe about poverty is wrong” among other publications.
If you’ve wondered why the issue of “poverty” has been so intractable this past half-century, you’ll definitely want to catch this lively discussion. Tune in this Tuesday, February 19th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/

Happy Birthday Pisces
Aired Monday, 18 February 2019, 9:00 PM ET
This show is dedicated to the twelfth sign of the zodiac – Pisces. This week, the Sun moves into Pisces where it will be until March 20th. This is a good time to pursue creative endeavors, performing arts and spiritual pursuits. Pisces is symbolized by the Fish, those two little creatures whose scales glint in the sun as they follow where the stream takes them. And just as that stream can symbolize the subconscious mind or the winding path of life itself, Pisces is like those fish, swimming along in the currents, taking what comes and throwing off rainbows as it goes.
During this time, you could find that ‘reality’ is in fact only a small bit of the true larger picture; the spirit world is really where it’s at. Try not to avoid or escape the so-called Real World in order to hang out in that preferable alternate reality. Be very careful that this does not devolve into evasion or avoidance.
Also, this week, we have a Full Moon Super Moon in Virgo. During the Virgo Full Moon, you’ll probably feel a sense of achievement as you notice the progress of your efforts to tidy up at home and at work. Things seem to be a lot easier to locate now that you’ve organized your stuff into more manageable piles. Although you may not be completely finished putting things away or tossing them out, you’re beginning to actually see some open space in your environment. In matters of health, you feel the effects of your exercise routine — or lack of one. Give yourself more time to reach the optimal goal that you originally set out to accomplish.
Tune in on Monday at 6pm PT/9pm ET to find out more…

How Intuition Can Rock Your World and What To Do About It
Aired Monday, 18 February 2019, 5:00 PM ET
This is the eighteenth anniversary of the day a dog and an earthquake taught me there was more going on in the world than I knew. I’ll discuss how shocking events can literally rock our world—if we can look beyond our limitations and see how the world really works. On Feb. 28, 2001, my dog Murphy went berserk and got us out of the house about two minutes before a major 6.8 earthquake rocked Seattle. During the quake we each acted to save the other’s life. How do you respond to events that clearly aren’t considered “normal” to a world that has lost its intuitive and healing ways? How do we learn to think with clear minds and open hearts—and our intuitive and healing abilities front and center? How do we live that way? We’ll discuss who and what intuitive explorers are, and what that can mean for our lives, and the planet. Call to share your “oh wow!” moments or get a quick reading.

Clearing the Road to the Impossible
Aired Monday, 18 February 2019, 3:00 PM EST / 12:00 PM PST
What if getting to what you have deemed as impossible, implausible, and far too creative for this reality, is actually possible? Imagine walking into a lush jungle. Leaves rustle above your head in the light breeze and twigs snap beneath the soles of your shoes. Croaks of frogs are mixed with the caws or birds. It feels like something is telling you to not enter. Maybe it is the broken down beware signs that peek out from behind vines. The ones that say, “Road to Limitation, keep out,” or “Beware this path of contraction.” However, they seem to slip your vision as the jungle, in all of its seeming beauty, envelopes you. Within moments, it feels as though vines grasp at your arms and legs, ceasing all movement. The green whips begin to move and contort your body to their every whim. You look behind your shoulder for sweet escape and instead see a carpet of jungle snakes. Vines creep up your neck and force you to look forward. Snakes and spiders litter the floor, hissing and snapping but you are forced to march on in this reality. It feels as if you have an illusion of choice and go day by day, doing the same thing, over and over again. Eat. Sleep. Breathe. Work hard. Have a hard life. Repeat. However, what happens when life doesn’t have to be as hard as it appears to be? What if it really is as simple as a choice?
What if through the use of some very pragmatic, life changing tools of Access Consciousness you could free yourself from the vines and bonds of this reality?
Finally, you escape the vines’ grasp and run until you hit a 100,000 feet tall boulder. It looks nearly impossible to get over without a struggle. But, what if you didn’t have to struggle and survive but you could have ease and thrive? What would it take to clear the road to impossible and suddenly make not only possible, but probable too? What if it really was as simple as asking questions to clear away the jungles that hold you back from the “impossible”?
You begin to ponder and ask questions, wondering how to get past this giant rock when it suddenly explodes. Salt and pepper colored glitter litters the ground. With complete ease, you walk through the piles and the jungle opens into a glade full of beautiful colorful flowers that dust the green, sun kissed opening. You are free!
Would you like to explore Outside the Impossible, where everything is possible with Venus Castleberg? On Monday, February 18th at 3pm EST/12pm PST we will dive in to Clearing the Road to the Impossible.

A Journey Into The Dark Feminine Through Dreams with Pearl Gregor and Host Lisa Berry
Aired Monday, 18 February 2019, 12:00 PM ET / 9:00 AM PT
We have the unique experience of chatting with Pearl Gregor who is a DreamWorker and fresh author at the age of 73 years young. Her first book in the series Dreams Along The Way, I, The Woman, Planted The Tree, is an immersion experience for seekers, healers, and dreamers, this book is a journey into the dark feminine.
This is a real, gut-wrenching and timeless story of woman’s search for the Divine Feminine. A surprising story of the desperation and final release from seemingly endless depression, this book is for those who have found no relief either in talk therapy, the medical establishment, pharmaceuticals, or conventional religious and cultural institutions. No matter what gender, most people are living deep patriarchal consciousness with no awareness of its presence. We are in for an interesting conversation with the intention of deepening your understanding of yourself as The Dreamer.
From Pearl Gregor herself – My Journey With Dreams – I experienced years of personal turmoil beginning when I was very young. I tried everything from iron tonics to psychiatry! Nothing worked until I discovered meditation and the world of dreams. I learned in December 1988 that I could ask for a dream. That first dream opened an avalanche of dreams. Shortly thereafter I was healed of clinical depression and began the long journey through healing. Dreams continue to be my teacher as I made the descent to the Underworld.
In the intervening 30 years, I have learned a good deal. I have lead dozens of dream workshops, presented about dreams and wellness to ATA Teachers’ Convention, International Women’s Day and to my graduate class at the University of Alberta as well as for Edmonton Public Evening Classes. I also spoke about women and dreams at a Carol Shields’ Conference in Winnipeg in the spring of 2008. I have participated in what I call, bibliotherapy—that is therapy through reading, writing, and conversation.
I have written the Dreams Along the Way series beginning with I, the Woman, Planted the Tree. The next two books in the series will be published sometime in 2019.
