I’ve shared before on Destination Unlimited that self-worth was an issue for me growing up. A series of events wired my young mind into believing that my worth was predicated on what I could do for others. I became a “people pleaser” to reinforce this belief, often leaving myself feeling empty and worthless. All of that changed in my mid-thirties when a series of wonderful teachers helped me find my essence, balance and worth.

Many are struggling with the same issues today. Pamela McDowell is a degree-qualified engineer, having worked in engineering, energy conservation, and business improvement. In addition, she is a certified yoga teacher and has training and experience in yoga therapy and EFT.

Pamela really started to realise her capacities with awareness – and how to use them – after leaving a corporate job and asking “what’s next?” Soon after, she rediscovered the tools of Access Consciousness and began asking way more questions.

Prior to that, she was committed to trying to fit it, be normal, save the planet, and generally trying to “get life right.” With the Access tools, she’s learned to trust more of what she knows, ask more questions and have more fun.

With political discourse and political discord nearly synonymous, and with the phenomenon of “fake news” – where facts take a backseat to emotionally-fueled beliefs — maybe it’s time we look at the fact that feelings make more of a difference than facts do. Might this highly-charged politics “out there” have something to do with the emotional terrain “in here”?

Our guest this week, psychotherapist Carol Smaldino thinks so … she has written a book that speaks directly to the stormy political climate, “The Human Climate: Facing the Divisions Inside Us and Between Us”, that examines the role of emotions in our political landscape, both in politicians and in the diverse populations and issues that make up this landscape.

As someone who speaks with and listens to “both” sides, what’s clear to me is that for the most part, each side sees the other side’s shadow – but not its own. Combine this with each side constantly receiving, embracing, and absorbing information that reinforces what they already “know” to be true. I know, I know. The other side is much more that way than we are. (Exactly what the other side is saying about us.)

All of which means it’s time for a “meta-conversation” where we become aware of and integrate our feelings so we don’t have to project them on to the other, and we become more aware of what pushes our buttons – and how to stay less susceptible to manipulation.

Carol Smaldino, is a social work psychotherapist, and has been a Huffington Post Contributor from 2008 through 2017. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York; she attended Madison High School, Brooklyn College and Wurzweiler (Yeshiva University) School of Social Work. She has also done coursework at NPAP (National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis). Before graduate school, she worked at the Bureau of Child Welfare, Roosevelt Hospital Child and Youth Project. After social work school, she spent five years working at a residential treatment center. She was a therapist and supervisor and student at the New Hope Guild, and developed a private practice in NYC and then Port Washington, NY. She presently lives and works between Fort Collins, Colorado and Lucca, Italy.

The End of Something: Seasons in Our Lives

Each period of our lives, each “season,” exists to teach us something. Each season challenges us, nurtures us, and provides space for us to grow. Whether the season lasts a few days or several years, the passing of a chapter in our lives provides time for reflection, for celebration, and serves as a large-scale model for any process of growth and change.

Join me this week as I take you through a season in my life and share the lessons—the good, the bad, and of course the ugly. If you feel like a large growth period is right around the corner for you—or if you would like one to be—you will want to tune in.

Here is the summary: in the fall of 2017, sick to death of the western Oregon rain that falls in a slow, steady drizzle from October to May, my wife Cindy and I decided to sell our house, get rid of or store our belongings, and go to live in Mexico. We craved some tropical sun—and good street tacos!

For most people it would not be easy to just sell your house, pack a couple of suitcases, and go to live in another country, and it wasn’t for us, either. What we found, though, was that by letting go of our old lives a new way of life and new ways of being opened up to us. In the process both of us have reinvented ourselves.

While we may be thrilled with where we are now versus where we were when we began, the process was not always easy and has been full of challenges. At times, it has been agonizing. Now, however, as we prepare to leave Mexico and bring this season to a close, we are both thrilled with who we have become, largely because we had the courage to begin the process in the first place.
