John Howard Steel – Caged Lion: : Joseph Pilates & His Legacy

When someone close to me was receiving physical therapy for a back injury, this person was instructed by the therapist to use certain techniques in repetitions of ten. Not being familiar with the techniques, the question was asked about the source. The answer was Pilates. I recalled seeing references to Pilates at exercise studios throughout New York City but never really explored this. Recently, I received a copy of a book entitled Caged Lion: Joseph Pilates & His Legacy. Imagine my amazement when I discovered that Pilates was actually a man’s name and that today his techniques are practiced by more than ten million people world-wide!

My guest this week on Vox Novus is John Howard Steel. John Howard Steel practiced law for sixty years and Pilates for nearly as long. As one of the few people still alive who studied with and knew Joseph Pilates both in and out of his studio, he is in a unique position to tell this story. John Howard Steel has been interviewed in numerous publications and regularly lectures to teachers and studio owners on the history of Pilates. He lives in Santa Barbara, with his wife, Bunny. He joins me this week to discuss his first book, Caged Lion: Joseph Pilates & His Legacy.

Judith Koeppel Steel – Love Brought Me Through the Holocaust

In 1939, the ocean liner SS St. Louis left Germany with more than 900 Jewish refugees fleeing anti-Semitic persecution. Arrangements had been made for them to disembark in Cuba with proper papers. Cuba denied them permission to land. The captain then attempted to bring them to Florida. Again they were denied. After a final denial of entry by Canada, the ship returned to Europe where some of the refugees were accepted in the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands and France. Many were later caught in Nazi sweeps of the occupied countries and ultimately among the six-million murdered in the concentration camps.

There were survivors from the SS St. Louis, a journey called “The Voyage of the Damned,” and many had heart wrenching stories to share. One of those is the miraculous story of a little girl saved by an amazing act of love.

Joining me on Destination Unlimited this week is my dear friend Judith Koeppel Steel. Judy was that little girl and her moving story is one of love, sacrifice and separation, redemption and hope. Judy is an ordained interfaith minister, cantor, Reiki Master and devoted mother and grandmother. Higher Ego Flexibility and Difficulty Forming Close Relationships with Family and Friends

This week on “It’s Your Ego—Stupid!”, Dr. Nick we’ll be looking intensely into the mirror of forming close relationships with family and friends and how higher ego flexibility can get in the way of this happening. This energy, for those entrapped in it, leads people to an approach in which they can only see truth as connected to what family and friends think, believe, and value. Often, experiencing a need to become more like others and less like themselves, as they lose themselves in these relationships. As a result, the quality of communication, compromise, compassion, and creativity needed to grow and build these relationships is significantly weakened. Because, they constantly neglect the expression of their own ideas, beliefs, and values, while readily taking on those of others. As adults, they frequently live in roles such as Cultist, Loyalist, Puppet, or Adult Child.

During the show, I’ll be looking at symptoms which can reveal the presence of higher ego flexibility and reflections of ego stupidity that occur when this person is having difficulty forming close relationships with family and friends. This show will also look at specific insights needed to transform higher ego flexibility into a healthier and more balanced place, with the use of ego medicine, and the impact of higher ego flexibility on one’s spiritual wellness.
