Cultural Segregation and Universal Health Care

An Interview with Dr. Susan Rogers, Director of Physicians for a National Health Program

“Our health care system needs to be healthier and more caring.” — Swami Beyondananda

America’s health care system is seriously ill. And maybe instead of seeing a doctor, we need to see a paradox. Here are some paradoxical “irony supplements” to munch on. Did you know…

• The U.S. spends more on health care as a share of the economy — nearly twice as much as the average industrial country — yet has the lowest life expectancy and highest suicide rates among the 11 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) nations.

• The U.S. has the highest chronic disease burden and an obesity rate that is two times higher than the OECD average.

• Americans had fewer physician visits than peers in most countries, which may be related to a low supply of physicians in the U.S.

• Compared to peer nations, the U.S. has among the highest number of hospitalizations from preventable causes and the highest rate of avoidable deaths.

Do the math.

Do the aftermath. The chronic illness of our health care system impacts all segments of society and the economy. And perhaps the greatest negative impact is on people of color. Compared to whites, they are more likely to be uninsured, face discrimination that creates barriers to care, and suffer from preventable health conditions and early death.

Our guest this week is Dr. Susan Rogers, director of Physicians for a National Health Care Program. As an African-American and a medical doctor, she has seen first hand how health care for people of color can be – second-hand. This not only has to do with health care delivery, but also prevention, nutrition and other factors that negatively impact health.

Dr. Rogers is recently retired from Stroger Hospital of Cook County, but continues as a volunteer attending hospitalist and internist there. While at Stroger Hospital, she was co-director of medical student programs for the Department of Medicine and received numerous teaching awards from medical students and residents. She is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Rush University, where she continues to be an active member of the Committee of Admissions.

Dr. Rogers received her medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and completed her residency at Cook County Hospital, where she served an additional year as Chief Resident. She is a national board member of Physicians for a National Health Program and a past co-president of Health Care for All Illinois. She previously was Medical Director of the Near North Health Service Corp, a FQHC in Chicago, and remained on their board for many years after she left her directorship there. Dr. Rogers is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the National Medical Association.

Training For Your Awakening

What is awakening?

It is a popular word these days but for me it has a very specific meaning. It means you have had at least a glimpse of your true nature and that you are not all the conditioned responses of the nervous system.

Even a glimpse of this, even hearing such a thing it resonating with you is the awakening. No, you are not yet a Buddha but you have entered the path.

Lisa Berry, my producer, and I thought we should dedicate a show on “The Flow of Enlightenment” to exploring what awakening is, when it means, how to recognize that you have had at least an experience of it, and perhaps discover how we can consciously participate in bringing that initial glimpse to a full blown realization.

So we will be taking up a bunch of questions:
What is an awakening?
Have I already had one and don’t know it?
What to do after an awakening?
Do self-techniques like EFT aid in awakening or afterwards
Is it totally an accident or can I somehow make it happen?
Is it scary?
In the East people are prepared for it, they train for it in a way
If I awaken will I fall back asleep
I am awake (I think) now what?

I will try to demystify this whole thing for you and give you some simple tings you can do to help things along.

Enlightenment is a divine accident. But there are ways to become more accident prone.

The word “mother” suggests images of comfort, home, safety, caring and, of course, motherly love. Coming after a trying and difficult year, many of us long for that special loving energy. Some of us have lost our mothers while the physical separation mandated by the pandemic has resulted in being distant from some moms. There are many who experience connection with a “divine mother” as a source of inspiration, comfort, and ultimate motherly love. Is there a way of bringing that energy, goddess energy, into our lives as a complement to our existing faiths and belief systems?

My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Reverend Laurie Sue Brockway, had that very experience more than two decades ago with the Hindu Goddess Lakshmi. Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway has written extensively on women’s spirituality, self-esteem, emotional health, relationships, and weddings. The foundation of her ministry is to celebrate all traditions and to include all aspects of the Divine. For more than 20 years, Rev. Laurie Sue has presided over a multicultural wedding ministry based in New York and is widely recognized as an expert on interfaith, intercultural, and highly personalized nondenominational weddings. She honors relationships between all couples and believes in focusing on the common denominator of love.

She is a graduate of the New Seminary for Interfaith Studies. She received her B.A. in Human Development from S.U.N.Y and studied Marriage and Family Therapy at Mercy College.
