Allison Jones – Measure Twice, Cut Once: Navigating Negativity in Toxic Relationships

When I was growing up, I showed an affinity for electronics and all things electrical. Woodworking and carpentry were foreign to me and as a result, one of the classes I did poorly in was “wood shop.” I do remember the shop teacher emphasizing a series of rules and principles. The one that he impressed upon us was, “measure twice, cut once.” This admonition was, to avoid errors and waste, be sure of your measurement before cutting the wood. It was sound and practical advice. May this advice also apply to our life choices including careers, associations, and relationships?

My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Allison Jones, says that when it comes to all our interpersonal engagements, we should “measure twice, cut once!” Allison Jones is a southside Chicago native who joined the military after high school and traveled the country as a federal contractor and subject matter expert in human resources, business development and federal personnel programs. Lower Ego Flexibility and Difficulty Dealing with Significant Life Changes

This week on “It’s Your Ego—Stupid!”, Dr. Nick will be looking intensely into the mirror of our ability to manage significant life changes that we are called upon to deal with. These include developmental changes involving our health, growth and development. Situational changes involving work, relationships, and finances. Also, societal and technological changes taking place in an ever changing world we are called on to deal with. During the show I’ll be looking at symptoms, reflections of ego stupidity, and the impact on spiritual wellness which occurs when one is caught up in lower ego flexibility energy. I’ll also be looking at specific ego insights needed to transform lower ego flexibility into a healthier and more balanced place.

Unfortunately, for those with lower ego flexibility, they often bring a rigid and inflexible approach to thinking about and dealing with significant changes they encounter in their life. This can involve thinking about change in old and outdated ways which don’t fit with the current circumstances involving themselves and the world. Often, “thinking inside the box” and only in ways familiar to them when encountering significant work, health, financial, and relationship changes taking place in their life. They also tend to avoid people or resources that can give them a broader perspective on these and other changes. Because this would take them out of their “cognitive comfort zone”, in which they only think about things the way they want to think about them. Which leads them into a lot of ego stupidity reflected in the ways they think, feel, and respond to significant changes taking place in their life, rooted in lower ego flexibility energy. Roles they may find their way into living, until they awaken, include the Authoritarian, the Religious Extremist, and the Paranoid.
