Where Did You Lose Yourself? And How to Get Yourself Back

As we go through our lives, we can lose ourselves and stop belonging to ourselves.

Sometimes, we can get to the point where we no longer recognize ourselves. And who we thought we were or would be seems so far away.

We wonder, “How did this happen? How did I get here?”

Losing ourselves begins subtly. We start by valuing others’ opinions, needs, and dreams higher than our own.

We may see it as our job to help others to be happy, satisfied, and fulfilled. And we forget that we can only do that for ourselves.

Whenever we see others as more important, we can compromise ourselves to seek their approval and take care of them. Over time, we discard our dreams to help them fulfill theirs.

Or we may wait for opportunities to line up, so it will finally be our time. This leaves us sitting at the sidelines of our own lives, waiting while doing for others.

We may also wait because we’re afraid that following our heart and our dreams will cause us to be alone in life or to abandon others.

Eventually, we may deeply regret the choices we’ve made, and may envy others who prioritize themselves.

In response to the pain we feel, we may fall into a victim mentality, choosing to blame others instead of taking responsibility.

The good news is that you can use those painful feelings as a wakeup call.

Recognizing where you lost yourself and deciding to reclaim yourself helps to empower you to find yourself again.

It’s never too late to find you and be you! You can still get yourself back. And you can still have dreams and go for them.

Now, I’m now passionate about others not having to experience autoimmune and wanting others to optimize their health ‘before it’s too late.’ So when my friend Susie Briscoe released her latest book, “Ascension to Legacy: How to Live Your Legacy in Your Lifetime,” I asked her to share with us what she’s learned about legacy. Susie first defines it for us “…legacy is something you create during your lifetime with the sole idea of benefiting generations who will follow you, whether in your immediate family or whether you broaden your horizons with the intention to benefit humanity.”

The Illusion of Life and Death with Clare Goldsberry

It’s been said that how we approach death can greatly affect how we live. The fear, grief and pain of losing loved ones can be paralyzing, but we cannot escape it. We’re all going to experience the deaths of people we love, and in turn, the people we love will experience the pain and grief of losing us.

CLARE GOLDSBERRY is a life-long student of religion and a spiritual seeker who has embraced an eclectic form of theology that spans the ages from Hinduism and Buddhism, to the philosophies of the ancient wisdom teachers and forward to the science of quantum physics. Her journey has included working with elderly people and those suffering from illness whose beliefs and fears about dying and death often cause grave suffering, and helping her partner Brent go through eighteen months of living with and eventually dying from esophageal cancer.

Clare Goldsberry joins Sandie this week to discuss her latest book The Illusion of Life and Death: Mind, Consciousness, and Eternal Being which draws from her insights as a Buddhist practitioner, her studies of Christianity, ageless wisdom, Hinduism, and her partner Brent’s cancer journey to provide a profound picture of what living fearlessly and dying gracefully means for all of us.
