Sarah Grandinetti – What If Parenting Could Be Fun?

It was when I turned 40 that I began to think maybe being a mom was not in the cards for me.

Part of me was relieved and another part of me wondered if I had missed out on something.

Then 5 years later I found myself in a partnership with a man that had a teenage daughter.

I remember when we first met and how much we liked each other. She is such a sweet girl after all and curious about everything. I guess in a way I felt I had something I could contribute.

Then we all did what most people do at some point in their relationship, we moved in together. That’s when things went a little south.

We began playing out these rolls that we thought we were supposed to do. I became my dad at times trying to control her choices in an effort to protect her from herself.

She became a little defiant and resistant to those around her. Who could blame her. I had turned into my controlling dad!

Well fortunately we had the tools of Access Consciousness to help us choose something different. We realized we did not like the rolls we were playing out and desired to be friends instead.

With Sarah contribution we realized we could actually enjoy each other in the little time we have left together before this sweet girl leaves for college.

We will be looking specifically at the three contributors to ego medicine which includes knowing what ego is, tuning into one’s ego energy, and replacing ego-rooted non-reality based thoughts (we often don’t know we’re thinking) with those which are reality based.

Also, I will be sharing lots of examples of what intelligent, spiritual, and imperfect people often think when they are experiencing thoughts reflective of lower or higher ego power, flexibility, or vulnerability. As more of us have come to recognize, fear – and the fight or flight response – puts us in our hindbrain, where we are hard-wired for survival. This is essential for the short term, but what about the bigger picture?

Transformative ideas and evolutionary solutions, and out-of-the-box creativity come from our forebrain. In times of crisis and upheaval, the urgency of the shituation gets our attention. And … it’s the creative part of ourselves that must give us the INTENTION.

Our guest this week, Shariff Abdullah, has cultivated the ability to hold two ideas simultaneously – the ideal and the real deal – and use the dynamic tension between the two to help us get from the urgent crisis to the emergent opportunity. He uses the same analogy Bruce Lipton and I use in “Spontaneous Evolution” – the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly – to characterize our current predicament.

More intriguing – maybe trying to get from “here to there” keeps us crawling like a caterpillar along the same linear pathways that got us where we are. Instead says Shariff, we need to work backward from “butterfly” so that we figure out how to get from THERE to HERE.
