Jessica Jimison, Functional Medicine Nurse Practitioner and Co-Founder of Origins Collaborative Care PLLC, loves the blending of science and education that is being a nurse practitioner, working with individuals and families, meeting people where they are, and empowering them to understand and improve their health.

This mission started after an exciting summer on a fish-processing boat in Alaska at age 19 was ended with a closed head injury, and the lengthy recovery set Jessica in motion to enter the health field. After ten years as a Primary Care provider, she discovered Functional Medicine, became an IFMCP (Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner) in 2018, and found her passion in complex, chronic inflammatory illness.

In 2021, she and Micaela Giles co-founded Origins Collaborative Care PLLC (OCC), primarily focused on identifying and addressing causes of imbalance rather than the effects and less on diagnoses. Their goal is physical healing, so OCC is taking a bold (r)Evolutionary leap by incorporating regulation of the Autonomic Nervous System into every treatment plan.

Michel Shane – 21 Miles In Malibu

After suffering a personal tragedy, we have the choice to dwell in darkness or reach out to the light. In that reaching, we may also be inspired to share that light with others, passing it forward in good works.

My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, award winning executive film producer Michel Shane (“Catch Me If You Can” and “I Robot”), along with his wife, Ellen, made that choice after the tragic loss of their daughter, Emily. In 2010, Emily was run down by a crazed driver on a section of the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California. Her loss inspired Michel and Ellen to create the Emily Shane Foundation, an organization to support local, disadvantaged students with the educational resources they need to thrive in middle school and beyond. The organization not only offers individualized academic coaching and mentorship but works to build relationships that are positive and lasting, with each student “passing forward” the benefits they receive by performing acts of kindness and compassion. How to Free Yourself From the Obligation of the Comfort Zone

So often, especially at holiday times, our comfort zone calls us to take care of others’ needs or demands over our own self-care.

This shadow side of our comfort zone can lead us to make uncomfortable choices that don’t serve us:

· We feel pressured to do what’s always been done, what will make others happy, and not to disappoint them.

· We don’t think about doing anything else. We simply do what’s expected of us regardless of the cost to us.

This cost of the comfort zone can be very painful for us, as it:

· Leaves us exhausted, worn out, and irritable

· Sucks the joy out of life

· Leaves us with no energy or desire to grow or to have new, uplifting experiences.
