In February 1968 the Beatles went to India for an extended stay with their new guru, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. According to spiritual counsellor, meditation teacher, and author, Philip Goldberg, that may have been the most momentous spiritual retreat since Jesus spent those 40 days in the wilderness.

When the Beatles took up Transcendental Meditation and visited the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram in India, it was a watershed moment in East-meets-West history. But long before the Maharishi there was Yogananda and Swami Vivekananda who was a key figure in the introduction of the Indian teachings of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. Now America is becoming a nation of yogis. Moreover, the adaptation of ancient Indian wisdom into modern western culture and the incorporation of yogic methods into the spiritual landscape have been more transformative than people realize.
