She died less than six months later, on Feb. 10, 2020, a month after turning 68. The Smooth River demonstrates how to treat one’s life as bigger and far more important than any medical condition, any tragedy, any setback of any kind. The Smooth River is the remarkable story of how a well-known public relations expert and her husband met her stage 4 pancreatic cancer head-on. With vigor and strength, they deployed all they and medicine had to offer. But, in contrast to narrow conventional approaches, the couple developed a far more expansive view of what strength means in response to a crisis for which there are no medical cures. They called this the Smooth River.
This clear-eyed transcendent perspective was so vital that they wouldn’t let anything disrupt it—not cancer’s lethal march, not the strongest chemos and their failures to work, not the frequent episodes of severe pain, not how society expected them to think or act, not the process of dying itself. We now live in a connected society where change can be fast-paced, constant and unpredictable. Rapid advances in technology have created an environment where the internet, smartphones, and social media are ubiquitous, and the 2008 global financial crisis has increased the sense of turbulence, danger and unpredictability in certain areas and are still being felt around the world to this day. We may have noticed that we are living in what the Navy Seals refer to as — and are trained to perform in — a “VUCA World.” That’s an acronym for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. The United States Army War College was one of the first organizations to use the VUCA acronym, following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. Military planners were worried about the radically different and unfamiliar international security environment that had emerged, so they used VUCA to describe it. VUCA stands for:
Volatile – Change is rapid and unpredictable in its nature and extent.
Uncertain – The present is unclear and the future is uncertain.
Complex – Many different, interconnected factors come into play, with the potential to cause chaos and confusion.
Ambiguous – There is a lack of clarity or awareness about situations
Marc has been predicting and forecasting that volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity are going to become more and more prevalent in our world for the last few years and on previous ILR shows, including the stability of both Democracy, unity and divide in the United States, continued global transformations, war and power shifts and even some big findings and announcements from outside of our planet that will contribute to our “Roaring 20s!” Join Marc as he shares some personal tips, experiences, breathing exercises (and a short meditation) of how to be a “Prospector” navigating in a “VUCA World” full of constant change, chaos, flux and flow…

ABOUT:
Thích Nhất Hạnh was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, a poet, a scholar, and a peace activist. A Buddhist monk who sought to apply the principles of his faith to the problems of the world and developed a worldwide following through his teachings and writings while living in exile for decades from his native Vietnam, and recently passed into Spirit on January 22nd, 2022 at a Buddhist temple in Hue, Vietnam. He was 95. His lifelong efforts to generate peace and reconciliation moved Martin Luther King, Jr. to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. He founded the Van Hanh Buddhist University in Saigon and the School for Youths of Social Services in Vietnam. When not traveling the world he taught “The Art of Mindful Living.” He also presented these “Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings” in 2012 which make up the very essence of the Order of Interbeing. They are the torch lighting our paths, the boat carrying us all, the teacher guiding us. The training allows us to touch the nature of our interbeing in everything that is, and to see that our happiness is not separate from the happiness of others. Interbeing is not a theory; it is a reality that can be directly experienced by each of us at any moment and helps us cultivate concentration and insights which free us from fear and the illusion of a separate self. Receiving over 75 accolades and awards for her leadership and service to the City of Los Angeles. She currently serves as Commission President for LACERS (Los Angeles City Employee Retirement System) overseeing a multibillion-dollar pension portfolio. Cynthia has been an Executive in the public sector and is the author (or co-author)of eight books.
As a Professor she received the “Presidents Award” from the University of West Los Angeles (UWLA) for her work as an outstanding Professor. Cynthia teaches leadership at UWLA School of Business at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. She has over twenty years of experience teaching and public speaking. She has received the Cherokee Nation “Community Leader of the Year Award” for her service to her Tribe. Abraham Bearpaw (Bear) is a Motivational speaker, Cultural Preservation Activist and Family Perseverance Specialist. He is a Cherokee Citizen from Rocky Mountain, Oklahoma and is the Special Projects Officer for Cherokee Nation Community and Cultural Outreach.Mr. Bearpaw is also a motivational speaker and he uses Cherokee cultural teachings to help others learn to “walk in balance”. He grew up with a foundation in Native leadership as his Aunt, Wilma Mankiller was the only female Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation for ten years. His Cherokee name is Yona which means Bear. He is the co-author of the book “Cherokee Wisdom: 12 Lessons for becoming a Powerful Leader”. He is a positive male role model in the Native American Committee as he has been clean and sober for many years.
