On Memorial Day, 1945, the war in Europe had ended but the fighting in the Pacific continued, Lt. Gen. Lucian Truscott voiced remarks at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery at Nettuno, Italy. Turning his back on the assembled VIP’s he faced the rows upon rows of headstones and apologized to the 20,000 fallen Americans who had been laid to rest far from home. He was quoted as saying, “All over the world our soldiers sleep beneath the crosses. It is a challenge to us – all allied nations – to ensure that they do not and have not died in vain.”

Fast forward to Memorial Day 2022, and the familiar voices of brothers in arms begin to call one another on the phone. People usually think of reconnecting with former military buddies as a joyous happening. However, for this Memorial Day, the topic of conversation was not an armistice, a promotion, or even a daughter’s wedding or new addition to a home, it was about the latest in a string of suicides that silence the voice of our brothers but brought renewed connections from other familiar voices. One desperately said, “Sir, I needed to call someone who could understand this.”

It’s often said that for those who have served “every day is Memorial Day,” a traditionally silent observance in the Veteran’s mind that can best be described as an impossible trinity made up of an overwhelming sense of guilt, grief, and grit. Usually, a moment of silence on this day is a welcomed and solemn way to honor the voices from our past, but for myself, after losing three former soldiers to suicide in the past few months, silence is no longer an option and the freedom to use our voice is the greatest gift that our veterans have to offer this Memorial Day.

Joseph Reagan is the Director of Military and Veterans Outreach for Wreaths Across America. He has almost 20 years experience working with leaders within Government, non-profit, and Fortune 500 companies to develop sustainable strategies supporting National Security, and Veterans’ Health. He served 8 years on active duty as an officer in the U.S. Army including two tours to Afghanistan with the 10th Mountain Division. He is the recipient of multiple awards and decorations including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

We now live in a connected society where change can be fast-paced, constant and unpredictable. Rapid advances in technology have created an environment where the internet, smartphones, and social media are ubiquitous, and the 2008 global financial crisis has increased the sense of turbulence, danger and unpredictability in certain areas and are still being felt around the world to this day. We may have noticed that we are living in what the Navy Seals refer to as — and are trained to perform in — a “VUCA World.” That’s an acronym for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. The United States Army War College was one of the first organizations to use the VUCA acronym, following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. Military planners were worried about the radically different and unfamiliar international security environment that had emerged, so they used VUCA to describe it. VUCA stands for:

Volatile – Change is rapid and unpredictable in its nature and extent.

Uncertain – The present is unclear and the future is uncertain.

Complex – Many different, interconnected factors come into play, with the potential to cause chaos and confusion.

Ambiguous – There is a lack of clarity or awareness about situations

Marc has been predicting and forecasting that volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity are going to become more and more prevalent in our world for the last few years and on previous ILR shows, including the stability of both Democracy, unity and divide in the United States, continued global transformations, war and power shifts and even some big findings and announcements from outside of our planet that will contribute to our “Roaring 20s!” Join Marc as he shares some personal tips, experiences, breathing exercises (and a short meditation) of how to be a “Prospector” navigating in a “VUCA World” full of constant change, chaos, flux and flow…

ABOUT:

Thích Nhất Hạnh was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, a poet, a scholar, and a peace activist. A Buddhist monk who sought to apply the principles of his faith to the problems of the world and developed a worldwide following through his teachings and writings while living in exile for decades from his native Vietnam, and recently passed into Spirit on January 22nd, 2022 at a Buddhist temple in Hue, Vietnam. He was 95. His lifelong efforts to generate peace and reconciliation moved Martin Luther King, Jr. to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. He founded the Van Hanh Buddhist University in Saigon and the School for Youths of Social Services in Vietnam. When not traveling the world he taught “The Art of Mindful Living.” He also presented these “Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings” in 2012 which make up the very essence of the Order of Interbeing. They are the torch lighting our paths, the boat carrying us all, the teacher guiding us. The training allows us to touch the nature of our interbeing in everything that is, and to see that our happiness is not separate from the happiness of others. Interbeing is not a theory; it is a reality that can be directly experienced by each of us at any moment and helps us cultivate concentration and insights which free us from fear and the illusion of a separate self.
