Born in Taos, New Mexico, site of the oldest still-inhabited Native American pueblo in North America (continuously inhabited for over 1000 years), Brennan was baptized at birth by the Tiwa medicine man Joe Sunhawk. Enjoying a privileged childhood as the son of singer-songwriter Michael Martin Murphey and the fashion model Mary Murphey, he took a deep interest in spiritual matters from an early age. He began walking his spiritual path at the age of 9, when the master yogi Swami Shyam took him under his wing and began teaching him the arts of meditation, yoga, pranayama and mantra magic in the Vedic tradition of Vyaas and Patanjali. At the age of 13 he made his initial journey to the Himalayas, where he received his first set of teachings from Swami Shyam at the International Meditation Institute in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh.
