An Interview with Dr. Laura Tadd, Professional Astrologer and Author
As a social scientist and internationally known astrologer, Dr. Laura Tadd has found an astrological perspective to be unparalleled when it comes to helping us heal from the past, access our potential and lead deeply fulfilling lives. One of her arias of greatest focus is the parent and child relationship. She is currently working on a book expanding on her e-book – Stellar Parenting: Enriching the Parent and Child Relationship – found on her website www.mythicsky.com.
The parent-child relationship is profoundly nuanced. Consequently, any attempt at a universal parenting theory is doomed to fail. It is not that parenting is without constants. All children need love, and research has shown the importance of physical affection; even the youngest of children need touch to thrive. But, if we hope to raise freethinking individuals who flourish in ways unique to them, we must tailor how they are parented.
The addition of an astrological view helps a parent understand their child and their relationship with them. It illuminates there are points of ease; where they push their child’s buttons and where their child pushes theirs. Likewise, astrology can aid a parent in mundane things, like individualizing study habits, as well as more complex challenges such as bullying on the playground.
Families operate in a systemic way, and when one member changes the whole family is impacted. Applying an astrological perspective, not only deepens one’s understanding of their child and their relationship with them, but it is also an unparalleled tool for adults to understand, improve and heal their relationship with their family of origin.

There is a lot going on this week, astrologically speaking. The big news of the week, the month and year is the Solar Eclipse in Cancer! We also have love planet Venus moving into Virgo and expansive Jupiter finally turning direct after four months of being retrograde.
The Solar Eclipse in Cancer on July 12th promises to be a memorable one! It forms a challenging opposition to transformational Pluto while creating a harmonious grand water trine to Jupiter and Neptune…talk about confusing!
The Cancer New Moon Solar Eclipse will remind us to think about things closest to our heart and home. We may find ourselves evaluating our feelings about our home life, our childhood, and even issues of self-love. A need for security lies just beneath the surface of our feelings. If any aspect of our life feels unsafe, this is the time to consider what our remedies should be. If someone in our life is constantly overstepping their boundaries then perhaps it is time to move them out of your home or to move yourself out of the situation.
Also, this week, love planet Venus moves into Virgo where it will be until August 6th. Many of us may be more critical of potential suitors or, if in a relationship, of our partner. Although we may think we’re being helpful, our words could be received as harsh or judgmental. At the same time, we might be more sensitive to other people’s criticism, because we may feel less confident than usual.
Jupiter, planet of luck and good fortune finally turns direct after a 4+ month retrograde period. It is in the sign of Scorpio which reveals what is not known. During this time, we may discover what has been hidden or be able to see what others miss.

July this year has some key lessons for us to learn about compassion. With quite a few feel-good transits, particularly in the first third of the month, many of us will be feeling settled – however, events later in the month are set to question that kind of complacency. We’re being asked to examine our consciences and to challenge the egotism and aggression we see around us.
Chiron turns retrograde in Aries on July 4th, initiating a four-month period during which learning from the past becomes super-important. That which has hurt us previously now serves only to make us more conscious and more aware. The Sun makes two happy trines in the first week of July, first to Jupiter and then to Neptune – these aspects encourage the free flow of money and resources and give us the sensitivity to help those who need these resources the most.
As Venus moves into Virgo on July 9th, a much more cynical air prevails. The Cancer New Moon on the 12th is a Supermoon and partial Solar Eclipse, opposed by powerful Pluto. The message here is not to start something new unless you’re totally confident that it has the backing of those who matter. The Leo Sun makes a difficult square to Uranus on July 25th, followed by a heated opposition to Mars on the 27th – these transits bring volatile, unpredictable energy which can be quite angry. July rounds out with a Full Moon and total Lunar Eclipse on July 27th which highlights uncertainty and the need for calm heads.

What’s on the cosmic radar for this week? We have a Full Moon in Capricorn, Mars turning retrograde and Mercury moving into Leo. During the Capricorn Full Moon, your inbox or voicemail may contain promising messages regarding a career opportunity, if that’s what you seek at this time. Your efforts during the past couple of weeks could generate the kind of response that you’ve been hoping for. Although there may not be a guarantee of a new position, getting feedback is always great for your self-esteem. If you’ve been questioning your recent decisions, you may become more certain by what the universe seems to be sending your way. Your hunches have gotten you this far in life. Continue following the many leads that arise.
Mars retrograde in Aquarius hinders direct action; it’s a boiling pot with a lid on it. It causes frustration, self-doubt, and people turning their energy – and their anger – inward, at themselves and at those closest to them. There is a silver lining to this fixed Mars retrograde, however, it forces us to have patience and persevere with our plans as much as we may want to throw in the towel.
Also this week, communication planet Mercury moves into Leo. During this time, we may be filled with big ideas and grand plans. We’re less concerned about the details and more interested in the broader vision of what we want to create. Confidence in our own opinions will be strong — maybe too strong! Watch out for arrogance or getting too wedded to being right. Our minds will be youthful and curious, helping us to think creatively and get a fresh perspective on an old problem.

The astro headline of the week is that we will be celebrating the Summer Solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere (and the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere). This coincides with the Sun moving into Cancer which means this show is dedicated to all you Crabs!
Under this influence many of us might long for deeper connections and a sense of belonging. Familiarity and security seem more important than meeting new people or exploring new places or ideas. The impulse now is to strengthen bonds with our partner, family and close friends.
The past may have a strong pull now, and we could find ourselves lost in nostalgia, flipping through photo albums or grandma’s old memorabilia. We might also be drawn to reconnect with people from our past, or to revisit our old haunts. Traditions are more attractive now, and we could even have a tendency to be a bit old-fashioned.
Also this week, nebulous Neptune turns retrograde until November 24th. Neptune is related to our creativity and spiritual life. It is often called the planet of illusion, because it rules all things illusory — the intangible, the ethereal, the abstract and elusive. When Neptune is retrograde, we’re more likely to be attentive to these areas of our life and give them voice. We may not present the efforts of your inspirations right away — that may wait till Neptune has gone direct — but we will cherish them all the more for waiting. Keep a dream journal, as dreams are likely to be vivid and meaningful during Neptune Retrograde, if we take the time to interpret them.

The Planets This Month: June 2018
Following a rather heavy-going May, much of June’s planetary energy is light, creative and fun, so for many of us it’s a time to shake off the stress and to enjoy some of life’s pleasures instead. Gentle Venus kicks off proceedings on June 1st and 2nd with two lovely trines, first to Jupiter in Scorpio and then to Neptune in Pisces. This energy allows imagination to flow freely and brings a spiritual edge to everyday activity too. Venus switches to a darker mood on June 5th however, in opposition to Pluto – this is a day to be careful of dangerous liaisons, illicit love affairs and unhealthy obsessions.
Mid-June is a fun interlude with lots to offer for those who like to party. Mercury arrives in Cancer on June 12th, helping us to speak from the heart and to engage those around us with honesty and sincerity. The Gemini New Moon on June 13th is a flirtatious vibe, perfect for meeting new people, dating or attending special social events. On the same day, Venus sashays into Leo, sprinkling some showbiz glitter over affairs of the heart and reminding us all that it’s OK to be creative, generous and larger than life.
Neptune turns retrograde on June 18th, so this is a moment to watch out for fakery, scams and invasions of privacy. A combative air on June 21st comes courtesy of the Venus-Mars opposition, which stretches some relationships but adds spice to others. Once Mars turns retrograde on June 26th, however, there’s a pause in the energy. Instead of acting, think. It’s particularly important at this time to re-evaluate your approach to controversial or uncomfortable subjects. June does draw to a close on a more serious and sober note, given the Capricorn Full Moon on the 28th – but it will have been a fun ride for most of us along the way.

You might find yourself drawn to taking classes, surfing the internet, or reading a variety of magazines and books. There’s an urge to learn new things, but you might have a hard time settling your mind on one subject for too long. Without variety, you get easily bored.

What a big week, astrologically speaking! The headline of the week, month and even year is that radical Uranus moves into stable Taurus where it will be for the next 7 years! Uranus in Taurus will shake up our ideas of money, property, and values, possibly transforming these things, whether we want it or not. While Uranus can certainly make 2018 feel as if a tidal wave hit it, it’s not all doom and gloom. The next few years will be a time to shake things up and to rattle the status quo.
Coinciding with Uranus moving into Taurus is warrior Mars moving into Aquarius. With the changing of signs, these two planets bring upheaval, instability and volatility. This energy will continue throughout the Northern Hemisphere’s summertime. We can expect a lot of fluctuation especially in the financial markets.
While Mars is in Aquarius, many of us may find ourselves asserting our independence and individuality. We will long to break free from other people’s expectations and we will want to experiment with expressing more of our authentic self, taking the risk of letting our eccentricities show. We’ll probably hate being told what to do, and if we have any authority issues, they’re likely to appear now and could even get us into hot water.
Also this week, communication planet Mercury moved into Taurus which means it will be important to think slowly and methodically. It’s not a time for fast paced trivia games and the like. Love planet Venus moves into Cancer at the end of the week so for the next few weeks it will be a time to take care of those we love. There’s also a New Moon in Taurus which means it’s a time for financial new beginnings.

The Aspects and Elements
There is so much more to astrology than Sun signs. It’s a complex ancient mathematical system that tracks the movements of the planets in their orbit around the sun. Astrologers divide the Zodiac signs into groupings that link signs together by specific characteristics, which makes it easier to learn the signs.
The four elements associated with the signs of the Zodiac break the signs down into the basic groupings of Fire, Earth, Air and Water. The natural world fits into these four classifications, whose basic characteristics — the heat of fire, the stability of earth, the changeability of air and the fluidity of water — can be applied to human nature. People with a lot of Fire in their charts (meaning, several planets in the Fire Signs of Aries, Leo or Sagittarius) tend to be hotheaded and warmhearted, for example, while people with lots of Earth such as Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn are usually practical and down-to-earth. The Air Signs of Gemini, Libra or Aquarius are cerebral and expressive while the Water Signs of Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces are emotional, intuitive and sometimes hard to fathom.
Besides the four elements, there are three qualities that influence the signs — Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. These qualities speak to a person’s general attitude and the way they tackle a project.
Aspects are an essential part of interpreting a birth chart because they describe the exact relationship between two or more planets — a physical relationship that’s specific down to the degree. An astrological chart is mapped out in a full circle of 360 degrees, and aspects occur when planets are zero degrees apart, thirty, sixty and so on.

Join astrologer, Kelli Fox, to find out how May’s planets will be affecting your sign. May’s big astrological news is the movement of Uranus, that most rebellious of planets, in Taurus, for a seven-year stint. On a global scale, we can expect to see tumultuous changes in our financial systems and perhaps in our weather systems too. Taurus rules the earth so an environmental catastrophe of some kind is not out of the question here, but any such event will prove to be a catalyst for good in the longer term. On a more personal level, each sign will feel the shock of change and upheaval in the area of life which Uranus now begins to transit: we would do well to remember that sometimes things must be torn down in order for something new to grow in its place.
Away from Uranus, May begins on a secretive and perhaps rather manipulative note for many, with two difficult squares on May 7th, between Mercury and Pluto and then between Venus and Neptune. The very next day, a difficult Sun-Jupiter opposition brings pride and ego into the mix, with potentially sudden consequences. Honesty is important at this time, and motives should be for the highest good.
Mid-month Uranus related rumblings are softened to some extent by the arrival of Venus in nurturing Cancer on May 19th, and by a very spiritual Jupiter-Neptune trine on May 25th. If we seek to solve our problems via love and compassion instead of via anger and force, possibilities will open up. May draws to a close with a positive and adventurous Full Moon in Sagittarius on May 29th; this is energy which helps us to think radically different thoughts and to be confident that things will work out OK.
